Rice Pudding with 20 Minutes Prep

02:41
Watch as Better Homes and Gardens shows you how to make rice pudding in a snap! Looking for a timeless dessert in a pinch? This creamy rice pudding recipe only has a 20 minute prep time, allowing you to create a crowd-pleasing dessert in a limited amount of time. Start out by cooking the rice yourself for truly homemade rice pudding. Pour 1 cup of water into a medium saucepan over medium heat and add 3/4 cup of milk and 1/4 teaspoon of salt. Once the liquid is almost boiling, add 1/2 cup of Arborio or long-grain rice and 1 teaspoon of butter. For a creamier baked rice pudding, go for Arborio rice, which has a higher starch content. Stir the mixture and bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to very low and cover the pan. Simmer the easy rice pudding until it's thick and the liquid has almost evaporated, which should take between 25 to 30 minutes. Keep an eye on the rice toward the end of the cooking time so it doesn't burn, stirring it every five minutes. While the rice is finishing up, pour 1 cup of half and half into a small saucepan over medium heat. The vanilla flavoring is what's really going to give this rice pudding recipe a rich taste! Take half of a vanilla bean and slice it lengthwise, using a paring knife to scrape out the seeds. Add the seeds to the cream and heat it until it's just boiling. You can use vanilla extract, but this gets added later. Whisk together two egg yolks and 1/3 cup of sugar in a bowl, then gradually whisk in the heated half and half. Return this mixture back to the saucepan and stir constantly until it thickens. Pour this sauce over the cooked rice and stir together. This is where you would add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract if you so choose. What's great about this rice pudding with cooked rice is you have the option to serve it warm or chill it for several hours and serve cold. Serve up the rice pudding in individual dishes and allow everyone to dress it up however they choose, whether that be by sprinkling it with cinnamon or topping it with fresh fruit! How to Bake Cheesecake Perfectly Every Time

04:44
Watch as Better Homes and Gardens shows you how to bake cheesecake perfectly every time! This simple cheesecake recipe is easy to dress up with stir-ins and toppers. To make this dessert recipe, preheat the oven to 350 degrees, then make the cheesecake crust. Mix 1 3/4 cups of crushed graham crackers with 14 cups of finely chopped almonds in a medium bowl. Add 1 tablespoon of sugar and a teaspoon of ground cinnamon, if you'd like. You could also add ginger or pumpkin pie spice. After stirring, mix in 1/2 cup of melted butter and mix well, using less butter if you used cookies in the cheesecake crust recipe instead of graham crackers. Press the crust into the bottom of a 9-inch springform pan up about 1 1/2 inches. For the easy cheesecake recipe, beat 3 eggs lightly and set aside. Mix 2 8-ounce packages of softened cream cheese, 1 8-ounce container of sour cream, 1 cup of granulated sugar, 2 tablespoons of flour, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract together in a large bowl, beating together well until smooth. Add the eggs once the cheesecake dessert is completely blended, gently stirring them in to prevent aerating the batter. At this point, add in cheesecake toppings that you'd like and stir them in, such as mixed berries or chocolate pieces. Pour the filling into the prepared springform pan and bake for 1 hour, placing the springform pan into a shallow roasting pan and pouring water into the roasting pan to reach halfway up the sides. The baked cheesecake is done when the edges jiggle slightly, but allow it to sit in the off oven for another hour in the water bath. Allow it to cool on a wire rack for 15 minutes after this time, and loosen the crust, letting it cool for another 30 minutes. Chill this covered cheesecake for at least 4 hours before serving. Try this easy cheesecake recipe for an dessert recipe your family will love! Strawberry Soufflé Recipe in a Snap

02:40
Watch as Better Homes and Gardens shows you how to make a strawberry soufflé recipe in a snap! A great end to a delicious meal, this individualized strawberry soufflé recipe is light and airy enough to complement any menu. These quick desserts call for five egg whites that will need to stand at room temperature for 30 minutes before you begin making the fresh strawberry desserts. While you're waiting for the egg whites, prepare six 1-cup soufflé dishes by using softened butter or margarine to grease the dishes. You'll then want to sprinkle them with sugar, which will give the soufflé something to cling to as it rises in the oven. Shake out any excess sugar, and place the dishes aside on a baking pan for now. Place 2 cups of cut, fresh strawberries into a medium mixing bowl along with 1/4 to 1/3 cup of sugar, depending on the sweetness of the strawberries. Let the strawberries stand for 15 minutes until they become juicy. Pour the strawberries and juice for the strawberry dessert recipes into a food processor and add 4 teaspoons of corn starch. Blend until the mixture is smooth and set aside for now. Get your oven ready to bake these easy dessert recipes by preheating it to 350 degrees. Beat the egg whites with an electric mixer on high until peaks form when the beater is lifted from the bowl. Gradually add 1/2 cup of sugar and continue beating until the mixture becomes smooth after about two to three minutes more. Use a rubber spatula to push the egg whites to one side of the bowl, then add the crushed strawberries into the opening you've created. Stir in a bit of the egg white mixture to the strawberries then fold the two together as you turn the bowl, taking care not to deflate the egg whites. Divide the mixture evenly between the dishes and bake for 15 to 18 minutes. These quick desserts puff up beautifully and are delicious as is, but if you'd like to step them up a notch, you could serve them with chocolate or strawberry syrup in a small hole in the center. This soufflé recipe is a light and delicious way to enjoy strawberry desserts after an already satisfying meal! Create Container Water Fountains

01:31
Watch as Better Homes and Gardens shows you how to create container water fountains! This calming addition to any other outdoor patio ideas will leave you feeling soothed, no matter the the time of day. The only things you'll need to create a water feature of your own are a container fountain kit, a container, and a few water-loving plants. Select a container that is large enough for your fountain and doesn't have any drainage holes in the bottom, like this 7x24-inch bowl. It should also be deep enough to keep a small pump submerged in water. You'll want to place the bowl on the edge of your patio or garden near an outdoor outlet. Nearby flowers can help conceal the outdoor fountain's power cord. Place the pump in the center of the bowl and fill it with fresh water. Plug in the pump and choose your desired water setting, like the bell effect seen here. Add water plants of your choosing to the water fountain, placing decorative stones atop the soil in the pot to prevent the soil from splashing out. Some plants, like the cypress, need soil for growth, so place the plant, pot and all, into the water feature. Water lettuce can be added as well, which floats freely. This patio decor water feature is the perfect blend of simple and relaxing, and it is sure to help you achieve a serene mood after a long day! The Best Doughnut Recipe Ever

03:18
Watch as Better Homes and Gardens shows you how to make the best doughnut recipe ever! No longer will you have to stop into your bakery to get these ever-popular breakfast foods: warm and flaky doughnuts. This easy doughnut recipe is great for sharing with family and friends at brunch. Start out one of your new favorite breakfast food ideas by measuring out 3-1/4 cups of all-purpose flour in a large mixing bowl. Add to this 1 tablespoon of baking powder, 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, 3/4 teaspoon of salt, and 1/2 teaspoon of ground nutmeg. Combine the dry mixture and set this bowl aside for now as you turn your attention to combining the wet ingredients. Mix 1/3 cup of milk and 1/2 cup of melted butter together in a measuring cup and set this aside, too. Continue creating these homemade doughnuts by cracking 4 eggs into a large mixing bowl. Pour in 2/3 cup of sugar to the bowl of eggs and beat with an electric mixer on high until it thickens after about five minutes. Add in the milk and butter mixture, stirring with a wooden spoon to bring this breakfast food to a creamy consistency. Add the dry ingredients and stir again until the dough is smooth. Cover the doughnuts recipe with plastic wrap and let it chill in your refrigerator for at least two hours. Once the dough is chilled, it will remain slightly sticky, so lightly flour your work surface before forming your homemade doughnuts. Roll out the dough evenly to 1/2-inch thickness. To cut the dough, you can use a floured doughnut cutter if you have one, or a 2 1/2-inch round cutter and a1 1/4-inch round cutter to make the hole in the center. In a deep fryer or Dutch oven, heat 1 quart of cooking oil to 375 degrees, using a candy thermometer to check the heat of the oil. Dividing Peonies

01:35
Watch as Better Homes and Gardens shows you some tips for dividing peonies! The peony flower can bloom season after season without becoming cramped, but you may have to occassionally divide up clumps of these garden flowers. The best time to transplant peonies is in the fall, so wait until after a hard frost hits your area before heading out to your garden. Begin the moving process by cutting the stems to the ground and throwing them away. Dig up the clump by sticking a spade into the ground and forming a perimeter around the peony flowers. Once the crown and roots lift easily from the ground, remove any excess dirt from the roots to reveal the underground plant parts. You should be able to see large tuburous roots, small fibrous roots, a crown, and eyes at the top of the crown. This one large mother plant can be divided into numerous smaller plants. Using a garden knife or hand pruner, cut through the crown of the peony plants. Each section should have one healthy tuburous root and three to five eyes on top of the crown. Dig a shallow hole for these garden plants and place a division of the peony with eyes facing up, covering it with about 1-1/2 inches of soil. Replant these plants three feet apart from one another in a site that drains fairly easily. Water these plants throughly and keep the soil moist until the ground freezes. Once this happens, cover the plant with four inches of mulch to protect it from the elements. Growing peonies once they have been divided can take up to a few years for them to get settled. Be patient, and in time, your garden will produce lovely bunches of these beautiful perennial flowers for many more years to come! Low-Cost Vegetarian Lasagna Recipe

02:37
Budget Broccoli Lasagna recipe: http://www.bhg.com/recipe/pasta/budget-broccoli-lasagna/ Watch as Better Homes and Gardens shows you how to make this low-cost vegetarian lasagna recipe! You won't even realize meat is missing in this tasty vegetable lasagna filled with creamy broccoli and carrots. Before diving into this easy lasagna recipe, get your oven preheated to 350 degrees. Lightly grease a 3-quart rectangular baking dish with cooking spray. While you're cooking nine lasagna noodles according to their package directions, measure 1/2 cup of flour into a medium saucepan and whisk in 1 cup of milk until it's smooth. Stir in 2-1/2 cups more of milk, along with 1/2 teaspoon of dry mustard, 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 1/4 teaspoon of hot pepper sauce to give this meatless lasagna a bit of a kick. With the heat set to medium, cook and stir until the sauce is thickened and bubbly. Remove the sauce from the heat and stir in 1/4 cup of grated Parmesan cheese, making this lasagna recipe even harder to resist with its cheesy goodness. Begin assembling your vegetarian dinner by arranging three cooked lasagna noodles along the bottom of a baking dish. Top with half of a 16-ounce package of thawed, frozen, cut broccoli, 1/2 cup of shredded carrots, and 3/4 cup of shredded cheddar cheese. Don't forget about the sauce! Sprinkle 1 cup of the sauce over the vegetables before laying down three more lasagna noodles and repeating the process. Finish off the veggie lasagna with the last three noodles and the remaining rich sauce and additional cheddar cheese. Bake the homemade lasagna for 35 to 40 minutes and allow it to rest for 15 minutes before digging in. With scrumptious vegetarian meals like this one, it shouldn't be difficult convincing your family to eat more veggies! 4th of July Desserts: Sugar Cookie Stars with a Surprise Center

02:16
Get the Shooting Star Cookie recipe: http://www.bhg.com/recipe/shooting-star-cookies-1/?ordersrc=rdbhg1109222 Watch as Better Homes and Gardens shows you how to make this 4th of July dessert: sugar cookie stars with a surprise center! Family and friends of all ages will be astounded by the hidden surprise within these cookie decorating ideas. Add blue food coloring to one slab of your sugar cookie dough and keep the other slab its original color. Roll out both cookie dough pieces until they are slightly larger than a baking sheet, then place the white-colored dough directly on top of the blue-colored dough. Cut the dough into four even sections for this cut-out cookie recipe, then stack them all on top of each other, alternating colors as you do so. Keep stacking until the dough is tall and wide enough to encompass the entire star cut-out shape. With the stripes on the side, slice the dough thinly, then begin cutting out the stars. You'll need three stars total to make one cookie, so make sure not to throw away the scraps that are still around after you cut out two stars. Instead, combine those together to form another multi-colored piece of dough. Cut out another star shape, but this time, use a smaller star cut-out, as well, to cut a smaller star in the center of that piece. Bake these 4th of July desserts for 10 to 12 minutes at 350 degrees. Once they are baked, you're ready to start assembling this bursting cut-out sugar cookie recipe. Pipe blue icing onto the edges inside one of the star cookies, then place a cookie with the center cut out directly on top of it. Once all the tips are matching, begin adding the special touch. Sprinkle red sparkles into the cookie cavity you've created, taking care not to pour too much in, or the top cookie will not stay put. Add another layer of frosting to the edges within that cookie as well, and place the final cookie on top to securely seal up the cookie treasure within. Break open these decorated cookies to end your 4th of July food with a bang!
