What Does it Take to Be A Fashion Designer?

06:17
Click for more: http://ww2.kqed.org/artschool/ Oakland high school student Zachary Fernandez made it to the finals on the first season of Project Runway Junior, then headed straight back to Oakland School of the Arts to continue his education as a designer. His newest collection, Kathmandu, was inspired by recovery efforts in Nepal after the devastating 2015 earthquake. Art School followed Fernandez's process as he sketched, sourced fabric, and designed his new project, revealed at a culminating fashion show in spring 2016. Hi, my name is Zachary Fernandez and I'm currently a fashion student. So I am starting my Kathmandu 2016 collection. My collection's gonna be debuting at my school fashion show, and so I have little under seven weeks to get this all put together. So our school assignment was to pick a city that we wanted to be inspired by for this collection. I ended with Kathmandu, Nepal, all of the trouble that they went through last year was really inspiring and I was able to take those ideas of imbalance and the destruction of culture and apply that to this new collection. These are the pieces that I ended up designing. They're ever-changing and they kind of just are always in flux. My sketching process involves a lot of images, a lot of mixed medias, I like to do collages, watercolors, acrylic paste, it's a real reflection of what my mind looks like. Here you have the final sketches that I've done. The sketching process for me is really a major step between just ideas and kind of this fantasy world that I've created in my mind to really functional wearable pieces. Fabric sourcing is one of my favorite things to do. It's really like a group activity, like meet a couple of friends, we'll just go, we'll explore the city, we'll get inspiration. So I'm looking for like a very pale blue that's almost like very silverish, and then I'm gonna be looking for a very deep, rust orange color. Okay, so I need to find this, but more grayish blue. The fabric store is one of those places that you go in with one idea and one concept and one thought, and you come out with like 500 more. This is it. - This is it! - This is it. - [Girl] Dude! - Hey! Yes! So I spend the majority of my time draping and it's definitely a part that will make or break a piece. I take a piece of muslin, which is just a really basic blend fabric, and I started sculpting it to the dress form. And then those mock-ups that I make of the dress form are then fitted to the model, and sometimes I try them on a model, I'm like, this is hideous, I don't know why, it just overpowers her or something happens and that leads to even better ideas and even more just, creativeness. When you design while you create, I just think it takes so much longer and you like pressure yourself so much more. So, my design mind is turned off. And it's just about sewing, and sewing, and sewing, and sewing, and sewing. So after I finish draping, I take a part of that mockup and I totally seam rip it and I re-pattern it, and then I cut out of my real fabric. It's always really nerve-wracking 'cause a lot of times the fabric's all that you have, either the budget doesn't allow for you to get more fabric, or there's simply not anymore left. It has this like box-like structure in it. The box is actually lined with horse-hair so that it can kind of take the shape and that's why I'm kind of trying to like manipulate it right now 'cause it just takes on whatever shape you really need it to. The show, oh the show. Six days, and I'm still cutting up fabric like, I don't think that's normal. There's always going to be that last minute hurry up and finish like state of being. I have a picture in my mind about how this is supposed to go, but who knows if it actually go that way. I think that there can be a lot of different ways to read the look. Obviously you look for like the main things like color, silhouette, is this an evening piece, is this a day piece and you just kind of put the garment and choose certain categories and that really helps people read fashion out, by the time the piece is on the runway I'm already thinking about a whole new collection and I'm really thinking something totally different, but it doesn't really hit me that these people, for them it's the first time that they've seen this. I've spent months and months planning and sketching and putting it together. If I see all these different things in these pieces, but no one else does, then it's kind of sad, but then it's also part of what makes fashion art, is because people see it in so many different ways. We are in my home, studio, bedroom combination in Berkeley, California. I have this look from Project Runway Junior, which was the first episode, and this look for my most recent collection. They really mean a lot to me 'cause they show how much progress I've made within the last four, five months.

Recently, our Fashion Design Students got the opportunity to be mentored by Himanshu Shani (co-founder of Korra Jeans and 11.11/eleven eleven) for a 6-week long 'Denim Project'. In this project, the students had to explore Denim as a versatile fabric, study it in detail and design a garment for a very important client...themselves! The students put together a stunning display of their garments and the very visual and tactile primary research they conducted for the project including that done at Ahmedabad and Gondal in Gujarat. Renowned designers who visited IIAD's Campus to see the display included Rajesh Pratap Singh, Shyam Sukhramani (co-founder of Korra Jeans and former Director Merchandising Global Hub at Levi Strauss & Co.), Gaurav Jai Gupta (founder of Akaaro), Aneeth Arora (founder of Pero), Gunjan Arora, Indrajeet and Snehanshu Mukherjee. The Human Project by Fashion Design Students of IIAD

02:21
Designer from Berlin mentors IIAD’s Fashion Design students for a 2-week long module titled ‘The Human Project’. Piyush Suri, the Creative Director of Handmade in Britain, visited IIAD for a module with students of the Fashion Design programme. He interacted with the Level 5 (Class of 2019) students of Fashion Design over a span of 2 weeks wherein, he honed their skills of self-reflection and articulation of design in words. He also gave them insights on connecting with oneself at an emotional level and weaving design stories while working on a project for better results. The final task of the project required the students to challenge the notion of a 'Little Black Dress' and design one for an imaginary personality, all in under 4 days. Each student created the perfect little black dress justifying the theme and depicting the portrayal of the character they chose. The students also put together a stunning display of their designs on Campus during a Fashion Show organized by them under the mentorship of Piyush Suri. About Piyush Suri: Piyush is an engineer turned design thinker with more than 15 years of experience in the textile industry. He established ‘Handmade in Britain’ in 2007 with an aim to promote and support designer-makers in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. He came up with this initiative to increase accessibility, create market opportunities and maintain high standards in the craft sector whilst providing a comprehensive support programme for designer-makers. Piyush Suri is also the co-founder of a popular design studio in London which specializes in hand screen printed cotton and linen fabrics, soft furnishing, wallpapers, and interior accessories. He has also authored a book titled ‘Handmade in Britain’ which features 90 designer-makers from myriad disciplines. The book narrates their design stories and showcases their works. HOW TO MAKE A FASHION DESIGN PORTFOLIO FOR COLLEGE! (Example)

16:02
If you're interested in studying fashion design in college, you'll have to include a portfolio in your application. Portfolios are used so the college can see the talent you have, so this is your chance to design whatever you want. Make sure it's something you're proud of and represents who you are. I made my portfolio this summer at a 2 week college program. I learned all about the portfolio process and had to present the portfolio at the end. I got an 89% overall in the class (averaging in tests and assignments) and a 90% on the portfolio itself plus the presentation. I see that this only took me two weeks which is a very short time to make a portfolio, so I'm going to make a few changes before I submit it. Thanks for watching! CAREERS IN FASHION DESIGNING.Go through the career opportunities of FASHION DESIGNING, Govt jobs and Employment News channel from Freshersworld.com – The No.1 job portal for freshers in India. Visit http://www.freshersworld.com?src=Youtube for detailed Career information,Job Opportunities,Higher Education details of FASHION DESIGNING. Out of all the design jobs available, fashion designing happens to be the most phenomenal and versatile one. Here you have the fine opportunity to learn about clothing, accessories and the designs which can be implemented for styling purposes. Fashion designing is quite a lucrative job and is in heavy demand these days. Whether it is Hollywood or Bollywood, fashion designers are very much needed for preparing bewitching and glamorous outfits for red carpet events, parties and other occasions that involve celebrities. The top countries for studying fashion designing include UK, Japan, United States of America, France and Italy. The fashion industry is very competitive. And in order to secure a good job, it is very important for a student to get enough training. He/she should be a creative person with exemplary artistic skills. Also a course in English, business, maths or sewing can be used as a proper foundation. If you are too ambitious, a simple degree might not suffice. Masters degree and certificate programmes are also available so that you can educate yourself enough to start a prosperous and bright career in fashion designing. There are several careers you can find in this field itself. Some include sketchers, cutters and pattern makers, sewers and fit technicians, head designers, specialty designs and of course the trend researchers. Other career opportunities you can explore in the field of fashion include fashion marketing, journalism, public relations, performing arts, photography, management and merchandising. To become a successful fashion designer, it is very important to get a diploma or degree at first. It might be easy to enrol yourself in a decent university, but it is often difficult to pay the course fees since it isnt inexpensive after all. However, there are a couple of big universities that offer scholarships to students who have talent and are keen enough to show some effort. India has also recognized fashion designing recently. Some of the best institutions that offer this course include National Institute of Fashion Technology (Delhi), Vogue Institute of Fashion Technology (Bangalore), Symbiosis Institute of Design (Pune), and National Institute of Design (Ahmedabad). A few international colleges are also offering certificate and diploma courses on fashion designing. Some of the bright institutions falling under this category are: • University of North Texas (United States of America) • Melbourne School of Fashion (Australia) • University of Westminster (United Kingdom) • Raffles Design Institute (Singapore) • Paris College of Art (France) • Ryerson University School of Fashion (Canada) Once you have graduated from fashion school, prepare a resume with all achievements enlisted in detail. You can always apply to PR firms if you want to work with celebrities or simply try your luck at a fashion production house. Some universities offer job opportunities for students too. So look out for them as well. For more jobs & career information and daily job alerts, subscribe to our channel and support us. VLOG| Life as a Fashion Design Major

15:11
**I'm going to post a separate video talking in detail about the Fashion Design program at UNT!** Here's a little glimpse of what I do as a fashion design major at the University of North Texas! We do projects like these all through out the semester, each one has a different theme. This one was the "Patterns Project" where we had to experiment with stripes, floral, or polka dots. I chose to do a Dolce and Gabbana inspired floral jumpsuit. It didn't turn out quite like I wanted, but here's the process!
